NBA Opens Inquiry into Joel Embiid’s Absence: A New Strategy for Player Health?
Investigation into Joel Embiid’s Absence from Philadelphia 76ers’ Games
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is projected to initiate an inquiry by the week’s end into the circumstances surrounding the absence of Joel Embiid, the All-NBA center of the Philadelphia 76ers, according to inside sources. Embiid did not participate in the preseason due to what was cited as a left knee injury management issue, and he is expected to be absent from three games this week.
Embiid’s Game Absences
These games include the season’s inaugural match against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, followed by games against the Toronto Raptors on Friday, and the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. It is a common practice for the NBA to examine a team whenever a marquee player is absent from a nationally televised game, in line with the player participation policy.
76ers’ Statement and Embiid’s Health Plan
The 76ers have indicated that Embiid is “progressing well with his individualized plan” and is set to enhance his return-to-play activities this week, which includes participating in scrimmages. This is a part of a new normal for Embiid this season, say sources, an approach aimed at ensuring the former NBA MVP’s health for the playoffs.
The strategy is anticipated to incorporate regular time off during the regular season and routine check-ups by doctors and the 76ers’ medical team. Daryl Morey, Sixers’ president of basketball operations, had earlier mentioned that the team plans to exempt both Embiid and Paul George from successive games this season.
Avoiding Back-to-Backs
“We’re going to be smart about it. Part of being smart about it is having both Paul [George] and Joel probably not play many back-to-backs, if any,” Morey stated. Embiid also revealed to Bontemps that he would “probably never play back-to-backs the rest of my career”.
Embiid’s Health Management and Future Plans
Embiid has managed to lose between 25 and 30 pounds, with plans to lose more, and will persist in wearing a brace on his left knee. Despite his preference not to, he has chosen to prioritize maintaining structural stability and protection. Last season, because of knee issues, Embiid could only play in 39 games. He made a return to play against the New York Knicks in the playoffs, albeit at less than 100% health. This was prior to his sudden Bell’s palsy during the series. However, he did represent Team USA in the summer, contributing to their fifth consecutive gold medal win at the Paris Olympics.
