Johnson’s Scintillating Performance Powers Hawks to Victory Over Depleted Pelicans
Jalen Johnson’s Stellar Showcase Leads Atlanta Hawks to a Much-Needed Win
Jalen Johnson’s electrifying performance of 29 points was the fuel that propelled the Atlanta Hawks to break their four-game losing streak, triumphing 126-111 over a depleted New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night. The Pelicans were dealt a hard blow with their star player, Zion Williamson, ruled out due to right hamstring tightness just before the game, leaving Brandon Ingram as the sole regular starter on the field.
High Scoring Hawks Outpace Pelicans
Ingram put up a valiant fight, scoring 32 points, however, the balanced attack from the Hawks, with six players contributing at least 11 points, proved too much for the Pelicans. Trae Young put up a commendable 23 points, and Dyson Daniels, making a return from a two-game injury hiatus, chipped in with 16 points for Atlanta. Larry Nance Jr. managed to net 14 points against his former team, the Pelicans.
Injury Woes for Both Teams
The Pelicans had to play without their key starters, Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, and Herb Jones, as well as the significant bench player, Trey Murphy III. On the other hand, the Hawks were also missing a few of their regulars, including starter De’Andre Hunter and rotation players Bogdan Bogdanovic, Vit Krejci, and Kobe Bufkin, all sidelined due to injuries.
Sweet Revenge for Daniels and Nance
Both Daniels and Nance seemed to revel in the opportunity to perform against their former team, which traded them as part of the deal that saw Murray move to New Orleans. Nance even blew a kiss to the Pelicans bench after sinking a three-pointer late in the third quarter, whilst Daniels celebrated his own three-pointer with a playful hand gesture aimed towards the New Orleans bench.
Pelicans’ Youngsters Struggle to Keep Up
Despite the young reserves of the Pelicans showing great hustle, they lacked the necessary firepower to match up against Atlanta. Jordan Hawkins, filling in as a starter, managed to score 19 points, while reserves Brandon Boston Jr. and Jamal Cain each added 14 points.
Game-Changing Fourth Quarter
The winning momentum for the Hawks was truly sealed with a 14-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter, stretching their lead to 116-97. David Roddy kicked off the decisive run with a three-pointer, and Johnson added more flair with three spectacular dunks.
Dominating the Paint
One of the most telling statistics of the game was the Pelicans being outscored 66-32 in the paint, a clear testament to the Hawks’ domination.
Looking Ahead
The Hawks are set to face the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, at home on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Pelicans will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night, playing their second game in as many days.
