Blazers Blaze Past Injury-Plagued Pelicans: Simons and Ayton Lead the Charge

Blazers Overcome Early Deficit to Dominate Pelicans

A sterling performance from Anfernee Simons, with a 24-point outburst, and Deandre Ayton’s double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, powered the Portland Trail Blazers to a commanding 118-100 victory over an injury-riddled New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.

Trail Blazers’ Resilient Response

Despite trailing for the majority of the first three quarters, the Blazers refused to back down. Contributions of 16 points apiece from Toumani Camara and Jerami Grant kept them in the game. The tide turned in the fourth quarter when Dalano Banton, entering the game, exploded with a 20-point performance in a single period.

Pelicans Struggle with Injuries

For the Pelicans, Brandon Ingram was the lone regular starter fit for the game and put up a commendable 27-point performance. Zion Williamson, their star forward, was sidelined again due to right hamstring and quad tightness. Absentees also included starters Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, and notable reserves Trey Murphy III and Jordan Hawkins due to injuries. Brandon Boston Jr., filling in for Hawkins, managed 20 points, while Jose Alvarado contributed 18 points to the New Orleans’ efforts.

Blazers Dominate in the Paint

The Blazers made their presence felt around the basket, shooting an impressive 54.8% (46 of 84) from the field and outrebounding the Pelicans 38-34. This dominance in the paint contributed heavily to their win, following the Pelicans’ second consecutive game where they were outscored heavily inside.

Banton’s Impactful Fourth Quarter

The game’s momentum shifted decidedly in Portland’s favor when Banton, rested for the first three quarters, ignited a 10-2 run with eight points in five minutes, propelling the Blazers to a 94-89 lead. From there, the Blazers never looked back. Banton had an impressive shooting night, making 8 of 9 shots in just 12 minutes on the court, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.

What’s Next?

The Trail Blazers will look to carry their momentum into Thursday night when they face the San Antonio Spurs. Meanwhile, the Pelicans will hope to bounce back on Wednesday night at home against the undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers, wrapping up a four-game homestand.
